Lake Martha Lake Association

Meeting Minutes

Monday, September 16, 2002

The meeting was called to order at 7:13pm at the home of Jim & Angela Miller – 7412 9th Street SE. There were 13 members in attendance.

The minutes from the August 19th meeting were accepted as typed.

Tom Giertz from Midwest Aqua Care Lake & Pond Management was a guest speaker. He gave some background information on the company before explaining the herbicide applications to control the curly leaf weed. The company has been in business for 25 years with 60 % of their business being Lake Associations and 40% being the DNR, Cities, Townships, & Hazeltine. He said that curly leaf could be controlled up to 90% with one application. However, winter bud storage can be in the subset for 5–7 years. Thus, annual treatments are necessary for continued control. Results on the curly leaf weed can be seen in approximately 5–14 days. The earliest that Midwest Aqua Care can apply the herbicide is when the water temperature is 50 degrees, yet the weed won’t absorb it until the water temperature reaches 60 degrees. They have an on-shore program at $1.90/sq. ft. or an offshore program at $300.00/acre (the price can vary depending on the actual participating acreage - for example $1.20/sq ft for over 1,000 ft). They also sell the product in bulk for an individual group to do their own weed control - a DNR endorsement is necessary. They do guarantee the on-shore weed control program. The company likes to have all applications and permits from the DNR for a Lake by March 1st. Joy Morris motioned to treat the whole lake and divide the cost by all residents equally. Mike Rydberg motioned to only treat the lakeshore to prove that it works. Craig Kasa and Bill Tregaskis will be in charge of getting the permit for either weed cutting or herbicide treatments. A subcommittee of Bob Halagan, Kevin Potter and Mike Rydberg was set up to determine the pros and cons of the Lake Association doing the treatments compared to having Midwest Aqua Care provide the treatments. They will report at the winter meeting. Mike Rydberg will be responsible for getting exact quotes on bulk & serviced treatments, plus for distributing sign-up cards to every residence.

Joy Morris reported that after depositing more dues and paying the annual picnic bills, the checking and savings accounts have a total of $1,513.03. She also said that to date 25 Lake Association members have paid.

Bill Tregaskis did not get 51% on the 9th Street paving petition. The reasons being funds and speed. Julie Kasa will look into the possibility of getting the road designated as Class A and the township would completely pay for the paving.

A grinder pump is being put in at the Kasa residence today and they should be at the Tregaskis home by Wednesday. Darryl the foreman said that there should be a 2-ft clarity difference seen next year. An e-mail from Kevin Potter stated that restoration will done next Spring.

Rhonda Triplett has moved in.

Mike Rydberg will check the calendar to set up a mid-winter meeting/party in late January or early February.

The issue of e-mail sensitivity was mentioned, briefly discussed, and concluded that jokes and chain e-mails should not go out to everyone on the Lake Roster – it is for Lake business only.

Bob Halagan motioned to adjourn the meeting. Lance Scott seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned at 8:35pm.
