Lake Martha Lake Association

Meeting Minutes

Friday, May 13, 2005

The meeting was called to order at 7:21pm at the home of Paul Johnson – 656 Halsey Avenue SE.  There were 11 people in attendance representing 8 households.

The minutes were accepted as written.

Joy Duenwald presented the treasurer’s report after stating that one resident paid $145.00 in dues, thus she will refund them $100.00.  The balance of the checking and savings accounts as of May 13, 2005, was $1,808.08 and $441.69, respectively.

Mike Rydberg mentioned that he will be gone during the July meeting.  He also noted that the time of the August meeting on the new schedule still said 7:00pm, which should be changed to before the Annual Picnic.

Angela Miller will send out an e-mail asking for any volunteers to be on the Hospitality Committee as no one has yet to do so.

Paul Johnson asked if the Directory really needs to be printed every year.  Mike R. noted that there are annual updates, such as the meeting calendar, the event calendar, the project teams, and new residents.  Plus, it can be printed cheaply by Vicky Rydberg.

Willard Hickman moved and is renting his house.  The person who bought the Forsberg property will be renting it to two of his construction workers – the land is projected to be developed.

Paul J. has not done any secchi disk readings to date.  He picked up the disk from Sue Brallier earlier this week, which happened to be completely rusty, so he put a coat of white epoxy on it.  Paul J. said that the DNR concentrates on the June through August readings.  Mike R. said that we should have the information to help track the weed treatment results.  Paul J. also said that it takes one year to get into the DNR website system, so he’ll just have to pretend to be Sue.  Dave Tabbut mentioned that Paul is carrying on a family tradition, as his Grandfather also did some of the disk readings.

Midwest Aqua Care says that the water temperature needs to be 55 to 60 degrees – the closer to 60 degrees the faster the product will work.  There are 39 people on the permit.  Nancy Halagan asked if we would be the first lake completed because of mil-foil transporting.  Theresa Witstine stated that they clean the boat between lakes with a pressure washer or something similar.  Gary Jackson has said that he can tell who treated last year and who didn’t when trolling around on his boat - from Mattson’s to Dehmer’s the weeds are thick.  Mike mentioned that with the permit the DNR sent a pamphlet that recommended the exact treatment that we are doing for curly leaf.  Paul J. said that recently curly leaf came up in a talk show before mil-foil did.  Lake Martha was referred as a reference for curly leaf treatments to a Lake out West.  Midwest will post all yards when treated.  Mike said that everyone from Jackson down was scheduled to receive the treatment, which should be May 17th.

There is a Rockford Township working session scheduled for Monday, May 16th.  Paul J. inquired as to the last meter count.  Mike R. said that it was an average of 723 cars per day.  Brad Burns had submitted the third petition for Halsey only.  Nancy H. asked what the deadline date was to make a decision.  John and Theresa Witstine said that there wasn’t a deadline.  Nancy stated that it seemed as though the Board wanted to stall the project until a new Board was in office.  It was mentioned that one of the meeting’s main topics was the annexation pressures from the City of Rockford, Buffalo and Hanover.  Rockford Township land was annexed for the future Menards in Buffalo by the airport.  Hanover is worried that they will not have enough population to be a city and compete with the surrounding cities.  Paul J. expressed that being annexed into the City of Rockford would not be a good thing, even though the area would most likely remain farmland.  John W. stated that Hanover may be a logical choice, as we are serviced by the Hanover Fire Department.  Nancy H. asked if we as citizens even have a choice in the matter.  Theresa W. said that our addresses would remain the same, as that is all controlled by the Postal System.    Mike R. said that the Township does not get paid for the land that it looses.  He also said that Lake Martha went through the process to be annexed by St. Michael with the sewer project, yet the Township denied the request.  The Rockford Township would like to know the resident’s interest and feedback as where they would like to go if the situation came to such a conclusion.  The Township’s new website address is rockfordtownship.com.

Paul J. said that the bird population in the area was improving – there are pelicans at Pelican Lake, trumpeter swans in Hanover, eagles all over, plus owls and loons around our Lake.

Joy M. said that she will be moving in July.  She volunteered to finish the last two months as Treasurer, or she could pass it on to a new interim Treasurer.  Mike R. said to put the topic on the agenda for the June meeting.  Jim Miller said that if someone took the interim position, then they could remain the Treasurer into the next officers’ term.

Dave Tabbut will donate a bag of copper sulfide that he purchased by mistake, which could be returned or exchanged when the Lake Association purchases the copper sulfate for the algae treatment.

Dave Tabbut motioned to adjourn and Nancy H. seconded at 8:10pm.  The meeting was followed by a showing of the Guy’s four-wheeler trip.
